The ‘Serralunga’ is Ferdinado’s entry-level Barolo and comes from a 4-hectare plot of young Nebbiolo vines planted in the Boscareto Valley in Serralunga d’Alba. As a result, the wine is fresh, full-bodied, and generous, with classic notes of dark ripe cherry, dried herbs and rose petals, rounded out by soft, fine tannins. Very approachable in its youth, it makes for a superb food wine, though time for ageing will also reward more patient drinkers.
Ferdinando Principiano is part of the new generation of exciting, young, dynamic winemakers currently shaking things up in Piedmont. His original approach tended towards making 'supped-up' wines that pandered to the 1990's American critics palate. Yet he saw the light in the early '00s, and set about making some big changes that created elegant, supple wines that aged spectacularly whilst remaining delicious to enjoy when young. His vineyards are also rich with wildlife and biodiversity, as he embraced a more natural, eco-centric approach.
