A wine that feels like drinking pure silk. Effortlessly smooth, with a wonderful weight that perfectly compliments inky notes of bramble fruit, dark cherries, and a subtle licorice note right on the end that's both sweet and savoury. A Californian Pinot that tips its hat to Burgundy if you will. Vibrant and refined, but still distinctly Cali!

'Vinos de los Ranchos' hails from two organic practicing vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley; Rancho Ontiveros & Rancho Vinedo (hence the name 'Wine of the Ranch's). Mikey makes this with a gentle touch but brings in fab texture thanks to a portion of the whole bunch in the fermentation (you can learn more about this on our blog).

The 2019 Pinot Noir Vino de los Ranchos has a pale ruby-purple color and a nose of blackberries, rhubarb, licorice and cola with notes of autumn leaves and dried herbs. The medium-bodied, silky-textured palate offers a great dichotomy of bright fruits and earthy nuances, finishing lifted, long and nuanced. 1,200 cases were made.

About Scar of the Sea

'Mikey Giugni has a way of coaxing so much character from the sites he works with... the wines are done in a style that prizes nuance and understatement.'

- Antonio Galloni

Scar of the Sea was kick-started by Mikey Giugni in 2012, with the focus of celebrating the Santa Maria Valley through Pinot and Chardonnay. The wines are inspired by the influence of the Pacific Ocean and how it affects the climate, the soils, and the geology of these coastal vineyards that fall under the spell of fog each day.

Mikey might not physically own his own vines, but he works closely with like-minded growers that practice organic or biodynamic farming as a minimum. There are some amazing sites in his range, including parcels of fabulous old vines that are very hard to come by in California (thanks Prohibition). The wines are made with the intention to tell a story of where they come from, the people who farm them, and to reflect each vintage under the California sun. Mikey is a young, dynamic producer that perfectly exemplifies the amazing energy and promise in California today.
