Wine Club Event
At the Table with Sugrue South Downs
06 March 2025
£45.00
Dermot & Ana Sugrue, AKA Sugrue South Downs, are making some of the best wines you’ll find from this green and pleasant land. We’re very proud to have these bottles on our shelves, and are excited to announce that the makers will be joining us for an evening to share them with us.
Dermot cut his teeth apprenticing in Bordeaux, and as assistant and then head winemaker at Nyetimber. In 2006 he helped set up Wiston Estate, where Dermot remained head winemaker for the next 15 years. At the same time as planting vineyards at Wiston, Dermot planted a vineyard in Storrington, West Sussex, and the Sugrue South Downs project was born. Dermot’s first vintages under his own label, starting from 2009 and made in a corner of Wiston’s cellar, rapidly garnered critical acclaim. Later, Storrington vineyard was joined by Mount Harry in East Sussex, and Coldharbour in West Sussex. Ana, also a highly experienced winemaker, came on board in 2021, and in 2023 the pair of them bought another vineyard, named Bee Tree, near Wivelsfield, and have built a new winery and cellar on the site in an old tractor shed. Sugrue South Downs is now Dermot & Ana’s full-time concern, as we enter an exciting next phase for the project.
All the wines are based on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir planted on chalk-dominant terroir, and offer a superb combination of poised, racy tension, bright and defined fruit, and complex structure and texture. The quality has seen them get high scores from critics and to grace the wine lists of many top restaurants around the world. We’ll be tasting their current range of sparkling wines, and offering you a first pour of something very special – a brand new still white wine, that’s being released just in time for this event. Although the wines speak for themselves, it’s a bonus that Dermot was born with the gift of the gab, and is a wonderful orator and host. This one’s not to be missed.
