Syrah on pure granite terroir from the Northern Ardeche, made by an absolute master. The wine is juicy and inviting with ripe, tart black berries. Textbook Syrah notes of smoked meat, violets and cola bottles, with a bite of white pepper. The wine is made with whole clusters, giving crunch and vibrancy. This could only be Souhaut.
Hervé and Béatirice began back in 1993. They’re in a prime spot, on the right bank of the Rhone River, right opposite Hermitage Hill. This is where they farm 7 hectares of vines. He is growing varieties we expect to see in the Northern Rhone with Viogner and Roussanne for white, and Syrah and Gamay for black grape varieties. Hervé wants to be as hands-off as he can. The only way he can pull this off, is with real knowledge of the region and of his craft and with real attention to detail. And this begins in the vineyard.
The vines are farmed organically, although he’s never sought certification. The rocky granitic soils he grows on are celebrated in his wines. He looks to an expressive and transparent style, merely supporting the fruit to express terroir.
