Markovitis Winery
Markovitis Winery (formerly Chateau Pegasus) are legendary in the world of Greek winemaking, being credited as the first winery in Greece to work organically in their vineyards. Markos Markovitis is the third generation at the helm of this family-run estate in Náoussa a region in the north of Greece, near Thessaloniki. He is famous for making Nebbiolo-style wines from the indigenous variety Xinomavro, which can be just as age-worthy as top Barolo.
Marko's grandfather planted 24 hectares of the Xinomavro grape in 1970 in the foothills of Vermio mountain, on a gentle slope, between a forest of oaks. Markos utilises this wonderfully, crafting a broad range of styles from this wonderful grape that perfectly s why Greek wine should be demanding all our attention. Whether it’s a fragrant rosé like Alkemi, or deeply textured age-worthy reds, there isn’t much that Xinomavro can’t do!
