Rich and generous strawberry and blackberry, with a beautiful underlying earth tone and perfectly balanced spice. The use of oak here is masterful and perfectly integrated.
There is no denying that 2021 was a tough vintage in Burgundy, with frost issues, and cold, damp conditions leading to a dramatic reduction in quantities produced. Yet despite the low yields, the vintage is one that perfectly showcases the amazing resilience of Burgundian winemakers. They are ones to weather every storm, and out of a tough year, they have crafted beautiful wines with good potential.
Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet are a producer that is a firm favourite at The Sourcing Table- we need no encouragement to work with Amélie’s wines! Hers is the sort of wine we don't get to offer all the time- there just isn't enough to go round- so when you see it, take it!
Amélie is farming mostly in Fixin with a real focus on red wines. She has an incredible ability to read the vintage, read her fruit, and understand how to tell its story.
I have never tasted Fixin like this. She is reinvigorating love and excitement for a part of Burgundy I daresay gets a little less than most. Maybe Jason Haynes from Flint Wines says it best: “...whilst many good producers have vines in Fixin, the village has never had a ‘poster boy’ on whom to hang its hat, in the same way as other villages. Until now that is…”.
