This is a vibrant and finely structured wine. Bright, intense red and black berries are complimented by a delicate hint of spice, a chalky tannin structure and a juicy palate. The nervy acidity and intensity of fruit carry a long, elegant finish. The vines that produced this fruit are around 100 years old and Cesar is just the gent to show us how to treat them.

The 2023 Sufreiral comes from a centenary plot in the village of Toral de los Vados on the other, southwest-facing side of Pico Ferreira, one of the few plots on limestone-based soils in Bierzo. It fermented in 1,000-liter vats, as he has different small plots that are vinified separately, with some 35% full clusters and indigenous yeasts (like all his wines). It matured in 600-liter oak barrels and a 1,200-liter oak vat for 12 months. It's very complete, floral and nuanced, elegant and fine-boned, with a different texture, chalky, given the limestone soils. The wine has 13.07% alcohol, a pH of 3.69 and 5.11 grams of acidity. 1,940 bottles were filled in January 2025.

About Cesar Marquez

César Márquez is the master of Mencia and has deep roots in the Bierzo region, coming from the family widely known as the most revered winemakers in Bierzo. The pressure that comes with this lineage is great, and Cesar has not only lived up to his family reputation but carved his own path making wine under his own name. His winemaking journey has taken him from the family wineries of his uncle, Raul Perez, to Mendoza where he worked with the Michelini brothers before launching his own project in 2015

In Bierzo, Mencia is the star of the show, representing 90% of plantings and there are a massive proportion of old vines. Looking at the vineyards Cesar is working with, some are as old as 100 and as high as 700m elevation. Not much about this picture looks like Burgundy, but Cesar is exploring what Burgundian-inspired classifications might look like in Bierzo.

Cesar’s wines are characterful, expressive and elegant. He expresses the terroir and fruit over process with a light-touch in the winery, allowing us to get to know each site through his wines. This young project is catching the eye of wine writers, critics, and definitely us!
