A miraculous vineyard site that was long admired by winemakers, but only cultivated from the early 1800's.
'Our Celtic and Franconian forebears had actually given up on what is now Röttgen. The hillsides were simply too steep to cultivate a vineyard. It wasn’t until the Prussian military and its explosives arrived in the 1820s that terraces could be formed on the steep hills. The volume of black powder shot off here is why it’s just a “Röttgen”, or “little clearing”... they certainly had a sense of humor!' - Heymann-Lowenstein
A very special expression of riesling, grown on blue slate and fermented in oak barrels with wild yeast. The vines here are well over 60 years old, and the resulting expression is marked with gunsmoke minerality, yellow fruits, peach and nougat. It holds its bottle age perfectly, and showcases exactly why aged Riesling is so rewarding.
Founded in 1980, Heymann-Lowenstein has spent decades identifying the best vineyard sites in Winningen (the lower Mosel). Today they farm 15 hectares across a wide patchwork of soil types, each of which has a strong influence on the overall style of their Riesling dominant wines.
These are wines of precision and incredible vibrancy. Heymann-Lowenstein are farmers first and foremost and believe that to make exceptional wines you must start with only the best fruit. Their vineyards cling precariously to the steep slopes along the Mosel reiver, and are farmed with biodynamic principles and using solar energy.
Heymann-Lowenstein make rieslings that famoulsy buck historical traditions. With many fermented dry, they are some of the great modern examples of terroir driven Riesling in Germany.
