In 2017, Sugrue South Downs marked the centenary of Dermot's great uncle's birth, and what better way to honour this remarkable man than with the release of Cuvée Dr. Brendan O'Regan! This wine is a fitting tribute to an illustrious figure in history. Dr. Brendan O'Regan not only founded a renowned school for hoteliers in Ireland but is also credited with inventing the world's first duty-free shop, a pioneering endeavor at Shannon Airport.
Cuvée Dr. Brendan O'Regan is a prestigious multi-vintage blend, composed of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, aged in oak barrels. All the grapes were carefully sourced from two exceptional vineyards on the picturesque South Downs of England, managed with meticulous care. This wine exhibits remarkable aging potential, balancing power and structure with subtlety and finesse.
While it's undeniably delightful to enjoy now, it has the capacity to evolve in elegance and complexity if you choose to cellar it for up to a decade.

Dermot and Ana Sugrue are a force to be reckoned with in the English winemaking scene. They met when Ana (a talented winemaker with extensive experience at two of Austria’s top wineries: Schloss Gobelburg and Umathum) was studying for her Master of Wine exams, and encountered Dermot whilst he was crafting the award-winning Wiston Estate wines in West Sussex.
At this point, Dermot had already cemented himself as one of the UK’s great winemaking talents. Before Wiston Estate, he made the wines at Nyetimber in the early 00’s, turning this once-unknown estate into one of the world's great sparkling wine producers. He started Sugrue South Downs as a side project whilst working at Wiston Estate, planting the now famed 'The Trouble with Dreams’ South Downs vineyard and crafting its first award-winning vintage in 2009.
Now, together with Ana, the Sugrue range has become more than its flagship wine (which remains a benchmark for fine English winemaking) – Sugrue South Downs is an in-depth look at the amazing potential in the South Downs terroir, captured in a multitude of different bottles.
We adore these wines. It is so rare to find a sparkling wine producer, anywhere in the world, let alone in the UK, making a range of wines so distinct and unique from each other. Each Cuvee is meticulously thought through - no two are remotely similar, in the best possible way.
