The North Coast Syrah from Pax Wines takes its inspiration from the great reds of the Northern Rhone. In homage to this classic style, this wine is blended across several vineyards and terroirs to create a balanced and powerful cuvée that is greater than the sum of its parts. Intensely perfumed on the nose and fresh and smooth in the mouth, with bursts of black fruit, violets and savoury spice.
Full bottle just 1,281 g. Imitation burgundy label! Synthetic cork. No foil. Dark gunge lines the top of the bottleneck. Various vineyards, barrel selection. 100% whole-bunch fermentation in concrete and aged for 10 months in a combination of concrete and neutral oak.
Transparent crimson. Very fresh and sinewy. Bone-dry and French-tasting! Though with less mid palate than, say, a fine St-Joseph. This would be extremely difficult to put in California in a blind tasting! It’s – just – cheaper than, say, Chapoutier’s Les Granits St-Joseph but is certainly a fine wine. So long as you like the slightly green notes of whole-bunch.
