País, also known as ‘Mission’ in California, is perhaps one of the most misunderstood grapes currently grown in Chile. Historically it was used in table wines; easy-drinking bottles to enjoy over dinner and think about just long enough to open the bottle and pour a glass. Felipe is part of a new generation of Chilean winemakers who see the immense potential of this variety to produce complex reds. Domino del Cuarzo’s País comes from a single vineyard of centenary bush vines on black basalt volcanic soils. The result: a powerful, mineral expression of the grape with crushed rocks, red cherry, and savoury wild herbs in abundance.
