True to its Saint-Joseph name, this is incredibly expressive and perfumed, with classic Rhone notes of violets, blue fruit, spice, smoke and a touch of pepper. Concentrated and supple with a line of electric minerality. There’s plenty of earth and savory St. Joseph character under the fruit, but the overall impression is fresh and mineral.

This is made from 40-45 year-old selection massale vines in the Chatelat vineyard, in the hills above the village of St-Desirat in the north of Saint-Joseph. With 40% of the fruit kept in whole bunches, this balances brightness and depth incredibly well. The wine has wonderful floral and cassis perfume, all underpinned by smoky bacon fat and black pepper. This is exceptional Syrah!

About Domaine Monier Perreol

Guillaume Monier is the fourth generation of his family to farm in Brunieux, a lieu-dit in the hills above the village of St-Désirat in the north of Saint Joseph, where they have 5ha of Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne on gentle, higher altitude slopes. His father Jean-Pierre used to sell the grapes to the local co-op, but in 2001 he decided the quality of the fruit merited being bottled under their own label.

Jean-Pierre was greatly influenced by the teaching of the German biodynamic guru, Maria Thun, and their vineyards have been certified since 2006. In 2008 Jean-Pierre started to work with like-minded vigneron Philippe Perréol combining their resources for some wines. Winemaking is hands-off: fermentation is in concrete or stainless steel, using natural yeasts; ageing is in neutral oak apart from their single vineyard Terre Blanche which sees some new oak.
