Terra de Cuques Negre captures the complex soul of Torroja terroir. Llicorella-grown Carignan establishes the structure, backbone and acidity while clay-born Grenache lends the elegant expression of red fruit. The organically farmed vines range from 25 - 40 years old and grow at 300 - 350 meters in elevation. The fruit is hand harvested, whole cluster fermented and then more or less left alone before being transferred to foudres and cement for 14 months of aging.

True to its origins and signature, Terra de Cuques charms with its warm and supple nature. Rich black and red fruits reminisce about its many hours of copious sunshine. Yet, a cooling wind threads through the wine as well, as both a fine, persistent acidity and fresh herbal essence. Wonderfully juicy, balanced and expressive, a wine without pretensions, simply telling the liquid story of a place and a people and a time.

Luis Gutiérrez - The Wine Advocate

The Torroja Vi de Vila has been renamed and is now the 2017 Terra de Cuques, basically because they didn't find enough grapes in Torroja for this wine. In 2017, it's still fruit from Torroja, but in the future there will be grapes from other villages. There are strong notes of licorice, red berries and Mediterranean herbs, and it's aromatic, expressive, open, clean and, frankly, very attractive. Like many 2017s, it doesn't show any heat or excess ripeness. The oak foudres are getting older every year and lend less and less aromas and flavors, and the wines feel purer and purer. This is a super elegant blend of Garnacha and Cariñena that's really balanced and has symmetry, definition and delineation, as chiseled and precise as if laser cut. There's even some austerity on the palate, something I didn't expect from a richer vintage.

About Terroir al Limit

Terroir al Limit was founded in 2001, by acclaimed South African winemaker Eben Sadie and the talented German Dominik Huber. The duo shared a strong belief that Priorat's dramatic terroir had the potential to yield exceptional grapes and singular wines. Together they rented a small plot of old vine Garnacha and Carignan and went to work crafting wines that would go on to define the modern face of Priorat.

Eben moved back to South Africa in 2012, and from there Dominik took over the reins and continued to drive the project to great heights. Today, Terroir al Limit crafts textured whites and sensational reds that Luis Gutierrez (robertparker.com) has even likened to Rhone's iconic Chateau Rayas. Yet despite this comparison, to us, these wines are peerless. They are entirely unique to the terroir of Priorat, offering a snapshot into this incredible Spanish region and the potential of its vines.
