A beautiful example of Pinot Noir, from the newest certified Californian AVA: San Luis Obispo Coast. Found between LA and San Francisco, the vines here hug the Pacific coastline with many vineyards being only a literal stone's throw from the ocean. It's certainly apt for a winery called 'Scar of the Sea' to be harnessing the potential in these once overlooked vineyard sites. This wine is bright and vivid, with gorgeous notes of raspberry, blood orange and pomegranate, plus a touch of tannic grip to finish. In a nutshell: Elegant and age-worthy.

Erin Brooks - The Wine Advocate

The 2020 Pinot Noir SLO Coast comes from vines in a proposed new appellation, the San Luis Obispo Coast, which would incorporate vineyards nearer to the coast and currently excluded from other Central Coast appellations. Made with around 40% to 50% whole clusters and aged 11 months in barrel, it has a medium ruby-purple color and generous red fruits: raspberry, pomegranate, red cherries and blood orange with autumnal accents. The palate is lightly chalky and fresh with layers of berries, earth and spice, and it finishes long and juicy. Drink Date: 2023 - 2038

About Scar of the Sea

'Mikey Giugni has a way of coaxing so much character from the sites he works with... the wines are done in a style that prizes nuance and understatement.'

- Antonio Galloni

Scar of the Sea was kick-started by Mikey Giugni in 2012, with the focus of celebrating the Santa Maria Valley through Pinot and Chardonnay. The wines are inspired by the influence of the Pacific Ocean and how it affects the climate, the soils, and the geology of these coastal vineyards that fall under the spell of fog each day.

Mikey might not physically own his own vines, but he works closely with like-minded growers that practice organic or biodynamic farming as a minimum. There are some amazing sites in his range, including parcels of fabulous old vines that are very hard to come by in California (thanks to Prohibition). The wines are made with the intention to tell a story of where they come from, the people who farm them, and to reflect each vintage under the California sun. Mikey is a young, dynamic producer that perfectly exemplifies the amazing energy and promise in California today.
