'Romelio' is a unique blend of Malbec, País and Carignan with a touch of Semillon that adds a delightful citrus note to the deep, plush fruit profile. Aged extensively in old Burgundy barrels, it is a riot of vibrant damson and red cherry fruits, with delicate floral notes of rosehip and violets, silky tannins and a chalky texture on the finish. A wine that will benefit from a few more years in bottle, but is undoubtedly approachable now too.

Luis Gutiérrez - The Wine Advocate

The red 2019 Romelio comes from an old vineyard from Maule planted mostly with Malbec and some 10% to 20% many other red varieties, all fermented together with 40% full clusters. This comes from a vineyard planted in 1945 on granite soils, a vineyard that was owned by a man called Romelio and which he vinified as Limávida at De Martino. This is super aromatic, showy, spicy (nutmeg) and floral, with pungent aromas of violets but with something citrusy also, reminiscent of orange peel. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (13.4%), notable freshness and acidity (pH 3.3 and 6.62 grams of acidity measured in tartaric acid). It fermented with 40% full clusters and matured in well-seasoned Burgundy barrels for 27 months. It's very tasty, with the grainy sensation from the altered white granite soils, sharp and pure, defined and precise, with very high acidity that makes it vibrant, almost effervescent. It should age nicely in bottle.

A mess of mashed berry juices with some thyme and eucalyptus thrown in. So much acid and flavour! Mouth-drying, gum-climbing tannin. The flavours seem to last forever.

About Reta

Marcelo Retamal is one of Chile's most influential winemakers, he worked at De Martino for over 20 years, driving quality and a move towards terroir-focused wines. He is a partner and head winemaker at Viñedos de Alcohuaz, a high-altitude project in the Elqui Valley that we adore.

In 2019, he had the idea for a personal project - RETA - working with his wife and three daughters, and a selection of the best plots he has discovered during his career as a winemaker. The grapes from all the sites - Quebrada Chalinga and Quebrada Seca in the Limarí Valley; and Romelio at the north of the Maule Valley - are picked early to keep moderate alcohol and ripeness, maintaining freshness, and have a gentle élevage in neutral oak. The aim is to produce wines that represent the place they come from.

This project represents a culmination of years of making wine from hundreds of different parcels and places across Chile, plus the experience of travelling and tasting wine around the world. As Marcelo summarises wonderfully: "All the work I’ve done over the past 24 years concludes with these 3 wines”
