Grapes are sourced from a historic vineyard on east side of Lodi, an area recognised for spice driven Zinfandel that belies the heavy stereotype. The site was neglected for many years, with some of the oldest vines aged hundred years old or more. The process to nurse the vines back to health and balance was painstaking but rewarding, and it now produces wines of concentration and elegance. Winemaker Nathan Kandler says “Victors highlights the savoury side of Zinfandel. There is no shortage of bright red fruit, but the brambly, pungent spice that first attracted me to the variety year ago asserts itself.”
Nathan Kandler decided on Precedent as the name for his personal wine project in homage to small parcels of old vines dotted around California, some of which are pre-phylloxera, planted on their own roots, some still managed by decedents of their original farmers. These viticultural treasures are giving rise to beguiling complex and elegantly drinkable wines.
