Made with reference to the wines of the Northern Rhone, this elegant, savoury Syrah comes from a unique parcel in the foothills of the Helderberg mountain. A percentage of whole-bunch adds spice and a fine chalky texture, which provide refreshing contrast to ripe, concentrated fruit – power with grace. Delicious now, with the potential to gain complexity with age.
South Africa is the place to find some really exciting, delicious wines right now. What gives South Africa an edge is the network of trailblazing winemakers with compelling stories to tell, there’s a spirit of sharing knowledge, experience and of course wines. Metzer Family Wines started up in 2006, making wines from individual parcels of old vines in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch. They're members of the Old Vine Project which is now slowly gaining traction to ensure that heritage blocks, vines over 35 years old, are celebrated rather than seen as a burden for the lower yields.
Their vineyards are located inland from False Bay and are heavily influenced by the cool south-eastern wind blowing off the ocean. Although geographically near to Stellenbosch they are closer in nature to Constantia, with both mountain and maritime influences. The family's aim is to produce wines that are expressive and individual, through artisan and low-intervention winemaking. Their guiding principle is that the winemaker must always respect the fruit, rather than imposing the winemaker's vision for what the wine is supposed to taste like.
