‘Basis’ is a Grüner Veltliner produced from fruit, hand-picked across three younger vineyards. This wine is fun and expressive, providing a unique expression of Grüner that wonderfully reflects the Kamptal vines from which it grew. Matthias has also chosen not to filter this wine, as he feels it strips some of its delicious flavour profile. Sleek, elegant, and feisty, with notes of white melon, star fruit, chamomile, and fleshy texture on the palate.
The Austrian wine region of Kamptal flows in Matthias Warnung’s blood. He was born and raised at his family’s tiny winery, where he fell in love with the picturesque vines clinging to steep terraces along the river.
Before founding his eponymous winery, Matthias travelled extensively. He honed his craft around the world, most notably with famed natural winemakers Craig Hawkins of Testalonga in South Africa and Tom Lubbe of Matassa in France’s Roussillon region. Craig and Tom taught Matthias that great wines start in the vineyard, offering pure reflections of their terroir, and the unique qualities of the grapes grown there. He adopted this ethos in his own wines, working organically with natural ferments and as little human intervention as possible. By his own admission, Matthias Warnung’s goal is to make and share the kind of wines that he himself loves to drink. His enthusiasm and passion are as electric as the expressive wines he creates!
