Monastrell thrives in Jumilla’s hot dry climate, producing concentrated fruit without sacrificing complexity. The balance is beautifully embodied in the Depaula from Juan Antonio Ponce. The fruit comes from 50-year-old vines from one of Jumilla’s highest sub-regions, which serves to slow ripening and produces a wine with both body and vibrancy. Its nose is marked by pure, sweet red fruit and plenty of freshness. The palate has lovely acidity and serious weight, with fruit and savoury spice combined in a delightfully approachable style.

About Juan Antonio Ponce

Juan Antonio Ponce (pronounced pon-thay) cut his teeth working with Spanish winemaking giant Telmo Rodriguez. He went on to set up his own operation in the region of Manchuela. Ponce wines have become emblematic of a new philosophy in Spanish wine: biodynamically and organically farmed, focused on representation of terroir and heavily influenced by the natural wine movement in France.

His vineyards are at high altitude bringing freshness to the wines. His vines are between 30 and 90 years old, and some of them are still planted on their own root stocks.
