Time will tell, but early signs from this wine show it to be on par with the likes of 2007 and 2003 in terms of the incredible quality and ageing potential of the vintage. A beautiful expression with texture like fine silk, and a remarkable lightness despite the bold, full-bodied weight on the palate.
"...Leather accents raspberry and blackberry fruit on the nose, while the long, silky-textured finish adds delicate notes of star anise, peppery spice and black olive. This complex, elegant masterpiece should continue to drink well for another decade and then some." - Joe Czerwinksi, The Wine Advocate
The talents of winemaker Paul Vincent Avril have made Close des Papes one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most acclaimed Domaines.
The winery has been in the Avril family for three generations and takes its name from the neighbouring ruins of the 14th Century papal castle. Paul Vincent honed his craft at the sensational Bordeaux first growth Château Mouton Rothschild, before taking the reigns of his family estate.
Here he has elevated an already iconic name into the stratosphere, and Clos des Papes' wines are now amongst the finest in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
