‘Cu Cu’ is a wonderful, organically grown expression of Verdejo that Bardo del Corneta has made in partnership with similarly minded local growers. The vineyards it hails from, are in the cooler area of Segovia to the northwest of Madrid. At over 750m above sea level, these higher altitude vines enjoy a slow and steady ripening that lends itself to a crisp, zippy white. This is a youthful, vibrant wine bursting with bright citrus zest, ripe melon, and soft herbs, with a spicy minerality on the finish.
In 2008 Beatriz Herranz planted five hectares of the Verdejo grape on old family land in the village of La Seca in Castilla y León. In 2010 she gathered some friends, loaded up a van with Verdejo grapes and took them to Gredos to make 300 bottles of her first wine. The year after she bought a second barrique and increased production. Since then she's bought plots of old vines in nearby villages, set up a small winery locally, and the project continues to grow.
Beatriz has put her heart and soul into truly getting to know the often undervalued Verdejo grape. The benign climate in La Seca allows her to work organically. The wines she crafts come in a range of styles - from a fresh, fruity style to a single vineyard that is lees aged in oak. She aims to achieve an authentic expression of the grapes and describes her wines as 'swimming against the current'.
