It was once common to plant different grape varieties together. It was an insurance policy at a time when we didn't understand as much about viticulture, so on a difficult year at least some grapes would thrive and ripen. These 50 year old vines are a field blend of around 20 local Portuguese varieties - the result is a harmonius balance of fresh flavours with a touch of green olive and a long fresh mineral finish.
About Antonio Madeira
António Madeira is French of Portuguese descent. He has returned to his Portuguese roots, in the Serra da Estrela in the upper Dão region, to make wine. António believes the heart of Dão lies in this mountainous region, and that the fine, fresh, mineral wines you can produce here - which he refers to as the ‘Grands Crus of the Dão highlands’ - have great ageing potential. He works with old plots of native grape varieties such as Tinta Pinheira, Negro Mouro, Tinta Amarela and Baga. This viticultural heritage, combined with the granite soils and excellent sun exposure make these sites distinct.
He farms sustainably without chemicals, in order to not mask the unique terroir. Grapes are hand harvested and winemaking is gentle, letting the quality and character of these old vines shine through.
