Can Rafols dels Caus
Carlos Esteva began rebuilding his grandfather’s 17th century estate, Can Rafols, at the end of the 1970s. He inherited an abandoned house and had the vision to plant vines and make wine there. He planted Bordeaux varietals as well as typical local grapes like Xarello and Sumoll. The terrain in Penedès is diverse, it goes from sea level to 700m altitude. Can Rafols are located about 15km inland where sea breezes cool the vineyards and moderate the ripening. The area has a microclimate, it's isolated and rural, an unspoiled environment where lots of aromatic herbs - rosemary, thyme and fennel - grow.
The soil is rocky vine roots have to grow deep to find water. They have 26 varietals growing on the property: "Grapes don't have borders. We treat the local grapes and foreigners with the same passion". A key aspect of the production is that the wines are only released when ready to drink, which often means long ageing in bottle.
